Tο Παρθεναγωγείο της Κυρίας Κάλβου στο Λάουθ(1870)*
* μια υπόθεση εργασίας για περαιτέρω έρευνα
Φωτογραφία του Joseph Willey (1829-1893).
H φωτογραφία αυτή προέρχεται από το βιβλίο του David Cuppleditch JOSEPH WILLEY A Victorian Lincolnshire Photographer, Charles Skilton Ltd 1987, σ. 53. Στη λεζάντα αναφέρονται τα εξής:
“In the lower photogarph we see a charming gathering of young mesdemoiselles posing in a array of Victorian styles. They are sitting on a croquet lawn with what looks like a badminton net in the background and could easily be mistaken for a group of young girls just about to enter Cheltenham ladies College. Nevertheless this photo was probably taken in the field behind Ivy Bank. All these young girls were Baptists enjoying some seemly ladies´exercise. Later the field was used as tennis courts”.
Ο Cuppleditch to 2002 αναδημοσιεύει τη φωτογραφία αυτή του Willey στο βιβλίο του AROUND LOUTH, A second selection, Sutton Publishing, με την εξής λεζάντα:
“1870. In the field behind Ivy Bank on Upgate, young and impressionable Victorian girls were encouraged to play badminton and croquet as part of their moral upbringing. The fresh air was good for their health and the games stopped them thinking about other things – notably boys”.
Στη δεύτερη αυτή λεζάντα έχουμε ένα νέο στοιχείο, τη χρονολόγηση της φωτογραφίας. Ο Cuppleditch δεν αναφέρει τίποτε για σχολείο (παρθεναγωγείο) και θεωρεί ότι η εντυπωσιακή αυτή ομάδα των νεαρών κοριτσιών ήσαν Baptists.
Η υπόθεσή λοιπόν ότι πρόκειται για σχολείο και μάλιστα για το παρθεναγωγείο της Κυρίας Κάλβου στο Λάουθ, φαίνεται ατεκμηρίωτη, αλλά για μας παραμένει μια καθόλου αυθαίρετη υπόθεση εργασίας.(Θα υπάρξει συνέχεια).
